WORKSHOP 05.02: Everyday Life Creativity

IZMIR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE!

WORKSHOP 05.02:
Everyday Life Creativity

Coordinator:
Aysun Aytaç
The Department of Industrial Design

Theme and Process: The workshop is based on the concept of “thoughtless acts”
referred by Jane Fulton Suri (industrial design researcher) and IDEO (a global design
consultancy firm) in their book Thoughtless Acts? Observations on Intuitive Design.
Thoughtless acts are our interpretations about the stuff around us. They are the
“… intuitive ways we adapt, exploit, and react to things in our environment; things we
do without really thinking”.[1] These mundane but creative acts that are often taken
for granted show how we interact with the given material world in our everyday life.
We recognize the possibilities of different objects, materials, spaces, forms and textures
and -most of the time unconsciously- engage with them in order to enable our lives.
During the workshop, we will look at our everyday environments through a lens that
we have never looked before. We will observe our everyday lives, document the
thoughtless acts, and analyse them in order to seek inspiration from real life. Could
these observations be inspirational for designers? Could they be used to generate new
design ideas? Could they inspire thoughts about design opportunities?
PS. THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE WILL GIVE CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE TO THE
PARTICIPANTS!

Number of Participants: Limited to 15 students.

WORKSHOP 05.01: OBJECTS OF DESIRE/ARZU NESNELERİ

Izmir Institute of Technology, Faculty of Architecture

WORKSHOP 05.01:
Objects of Desire/Arzu Nesneleri

Sub-themes:
Imitation/Benzetme,
Context/Bağlam and
Object Hospital continues/Nesne Hastanesi devam ediyor

Coordinators: Dr. Nilüfer Talu, Dr. Ebru Yılmaz
nilufertalu@iyte.edu.tr, ebruyilmaz@iyte.edu.tr
The Department of Industrial Design and The Department of Architecture

Theme and Process: This workshop is based on a cultural state where the subjects used to behave as consumers and the objects used to be perceived as design products that encoded much more beyond their use value rather to encourage for desires… Through three sub-themes, Imitation/Benzetme, Context/Bağlam and Object Hospital Continues/Nesne Hastanesi Devam Ediyor, we will question the dialectics between subject-object, that has already been lost within the mode of industrial production. We will work on some objects/things (old, broken or with missing parts); and some selected design products (from IKEA). Missing parts will be completed; perfect bodies of design products will be imitated/reproduced and the context problem, related to the ‘Objects of Desire’, will be unexpectedly represented.

Number of Participants: Limited to 30 students, Hurry up!

Last Date of Application: 01 October (Send an e-mail to nilufertalu@iyte.edu.tr or ebruyilmaz@iyte.edu.tr¸ Do not hesitate to contact us)

Workshop Date: October 02-05, 2012

Place: Izmir Institute of Technology, Faculty of Architecture, B Block

PS1. IF YOU HAVE DAILY LIFE OBJECTS (OLD, BROKEN OR WITH MISSING PARTS), BRING THEM TO THE WORKSHOP! BODY RELATED OBJECTS WOULD BE PERFECT!

PS2. FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE WILL GIVE CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE TO THE PARTICIPANTS!
